Date published 07/04/2026

An updated revision of HPU 620 Renal Dialysis Unit (Revision 8, April 2026) has been uploaded to the AusHFG website. The revised version has been informed by an extensive consultation process with clinical staff, technical experts and consumer representatives.

Key changes to the document include:

  • Enhanced guidance for haemodialysis water treatment plant design, services, and operational reliability to ensure consistently high‑quality dialysis water.
  • Updated dialysis wastewater strategies focused on reducing water and energy consumption, in line with jurisdictional requirements.
  • Emphasis on infrastructure resilience and maintenance through strengthened guidance on drainage, tundish, and pipework requirements to support hygiene, corrosion resistance, biofilm prevention, and maintainability.
  • Added considerations for alarmed monitoring and redundancy to RO plant HVAC systems, and for power supply types for renal dialysis machines, to support treatment continuity.
  • Improved consistency of dialysis box and service recommendations with other HPU guidance (e.g. ICU), including specific provisions for peritoneal dialysis.
  • Emphasis on reliable ICT infrastructure, including data points and Wi‑Fi, to support remote dialysis data access and maintenance troubleshooting.
  • Inclusion of ambulance access for stand-alone dialysis units and designated areas for delivery/offloading of bulk supplies separate from patient entry.
  • Adjustments to align with the updated AusHFG Part D: Infection Prevention and Control guidance, including enhanced hand hygiene provisions, IPC risk assessment and optional addition of Reprocessing Room - High Level Disinfection where point-of-use reprocessing of ultrasound transducers is undertaken.
  • Rationalisation of Equipment Store area reflecting common integration with the Biomedical Workroom – Renal Dialysis to improve space efficiency.
  • Inclusion of Patient Bay – Renal Dialysis, High Assistance as an optional area for use in place of standard Treatment Bays where required.

A thank you is extended to all those who have contributed to the review and update of this document.
