Date published 28/11/2018

An updated health planning unit, HPU440 Medical Imaging Unit (Revision 7), has been uploaded. This HPU describes the operational, functional and design requirements for the provision of a range of medical imaging modalities for diagnostic and therapeutic radiological examinations. The revised version has been informed by an extensive consultation process with clinical and technical experts.

Key changes to the document include:

  • general revision of content to align with current best practice models of service delivery, as well as current and emerging technologies;
  • restructure of the schedule of accommodation to provide recommended spatial allocations by capacity requirement (i.e. number of modalities for each modality type) rather than role delineation;
  • inclusion of recommended area requirements for satellite emergency and ambulatory care medical imaging units; and
  • inclusion of a diagram for the MRI four zone system, demonstrating the provision of a ‘buffer’ around the MRI which is free of potentially hazardous metal objects and to support access restriction policies.

A thank you is extended to all those who have contributed to the review of this document.
