HPU134 Adult Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit describes the operational, functional and design requirements for adult acute mental health inpatient units. These units provide short to medium term inpatient assessment and treatment services for people, typically aged 18 to 64, experiencing severe episodes of mental illness who cannot be adequately treated in a less restrictive environment.

- removal of duplicated information included in HPU 131 Mental Health Overarching Guideline, published in March 2018;
- an update of all content with a focus on contemporary recovery oriented care models of service delivery and design solutions that support active engagement between consumers and staff; and
- an update of the schedule of accommodation including reorganisation to align with the core functional zones and updates to align with contemporary models of care and the recently revised mental health standard components.
